Men's Volleyball: Freshman known for TV spot

The popular show Veep’s sixth season premieres on April 16, and fans with a taste for the political comedy and the Emerson men’s volleyball team might be surprised to stumble upon middle blocker John Bucy while binge-watching to catch up.

Bucy appeared in the season two finale, playing a student at a science fair. It was taped during his freshman year in high school.

After Vice President Selina Meyer, played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, receives a phone call from an administration official that draws her ire, she leaves the science fair in a huff. Bucy’s character tries to stop her to check out his science project on her way out, but to his dismay, she walks right past it. Later, Bucy’s character is invited to tour the White House.

Now a freshman performing arts major at Emerson, Bucy said he gets asked every few months about the role. He said his middle school theater teacher posted on his Facebook wall last month saying she had just spotted him in the Veep episode.

“It was really cool because it was one of my first major gigs,” Bucy said. “It was so cool to be on a real set and everything … The cast and crew were super nice, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus was a sweetheart.”

When appearing on Emerson Channel Sports in volleyball games instead of HBO, Bucy has collected 79 kills, good for fourth on the team in his first year with the Lions.
