The Emerson softball team notched its first conference wins of the season on April 11 in a two-game sweep of Smith College.
The two New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference wins match the Lions’ total conference wins from last season and are the first time the team has swept in a conference doubleheader.
“It just gave us a little bit of confidence that we can win in the conference,” said head coach Phil McElroy. “[Now] it’s just continuing to work on things that are helping us get [wins].”
The Lions are currently 11-16 overall, and 2-12 in NEWMAC play. Last season, they posted 13-23 overall and 2-16 conference records.
“Our goals were to do better than we did last year and to have a healthy season,” said McElroy. “So far we’ve met some of those goals.”
Part of the reason it took so long for the Lions to get their first conference win, according to McElroy, was the way their schedule was set up. The first four teams they faced are the top-ranked teams in the conference.
“It’s been a tough road,” said McElroy. “But they started hitting the other day, and that’s contagious, so it’s mainly just a confidence issue.”
The squad has five more games left in its season, including two conference doubleheaders against Coast Guard Academy and Clark University, which are ranked seventh and last in the NEWMAC, respectively. McElroy said his team is looking forward to its last weekend.
“I think everyone’s kind of excited about the fact that we’re playing games at the end of the season that mean something,” he said.
