NEWMAC News: Playoff picture Oct. 23

Men's soccer

Overall Record: 5-7-3

NEWMAC Record: 0-5

Remaining NEWMAC opponents: Clark and Babson

Beacon’s take: The season is winding down for the Lions, who have yet to win a NEWMAC game. The team’s home game vs. Clark (1-3-1 in NEWMAC play) on Oct. 25 is its best chance to win a conference game before the season ends. If both Clark and Springfield lose out the rest of their seasons, and Emerson wins their remaining three matches, the Lions would qualify for the fifth and final playoff spot. The team, however, faces a tough opponent in its last conference game vs. Babson (3-2, 11-4 in conference).

Women's soccer

Overall Record: 4-10-1

NEWMAC Record: 1-6

Remaining NEWMAC opponents: Coast Guard, MIT, and Clark

Beacon’s take: The women’s team has struggled in conference play this season, dropping five straight games after its only NEWMAC win. If Emerson wins its remaining three conference games and Coast Guard, Wellesley, and Mount Holyoke lose their last games, the Lady Lions would qualify for the seventh and final playoff spot. If winning three games in a row wasn’t a daunting enough task already, the Lady Lions’ final game of the season is against Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which currently sits atop the NEWMAC rankings with a 6-0-1 record, 11-3-2 overall.

Cross country

Men’s Finishes: Second, First, Eighth, Seventh, 14th

Women’s Finishes: Second, First, Sixth, Fifth, 10th

Remaining Schedule: The next meet for each team is the NEWMAC Championship on Nov. 1.

Beacon’s take: Every cross country team in the conference is invited to the decisive NEWMAC championship meet. MIT—both of whose teams are ranked nationally—ran away with both the women’s and men’s titles last year, so the Lions have their work cut out for them. Senior Ali Dokus will look to improve on her 64th place finish from last season’s NEWMAC meet. Freshman Tim Gersten, who led the men’s team with a 67th place finish at the Saints Invitational, will compete in his first championship meet.

Women's tennis

Overall Record: 0-11

NEWMAC Record: 0-8

Remaining NEWMAC opponents: None

Beacon’s take: The women’s tennis season ended on Oct. 15. The Lions were unable to win a match.
