European clothing store Primark opened its first-ever United States location in Downtown Crossing on Sept. 10. The store carries affordable clothing and accessories for men, women, and children, as well as cosmetics and home goods. Primark started in Dublin, Ireland in 1969 and has since spread to nine countries with 270 stores.
For the opening of the four story store at 10 Summer St., customers were corralled through barricades that led them to workers handing out complimentary water bottles and tote bags. Boston radio station Kiss 108 set up a stand and played music that could be heard throughout Downtown Crossing.
Sophomore marketing communication major Cassia Enright went shopping there on opening day.
“I’m super happy about [the store opening],” Enright said, with a bag full of her purchases in hand. Enright said she was pleased with how close the store is to campus—about a 10 minute walk—and how affordable the products are. She compared Primark to a combination of H&M and Target.
“I would highly recommend it,” freshman visual and media arts major major Julia Saukkonen said. She said she was also satisfied with her experience at Primark.
"I thought it was really wonderful,” Saukkonen said. “The prices were really good, and the stuff was super cute."
