Jacqueline Martinez was sworn into the Emerson College Police Department as a patrol officer this month, according to Emerson’s website.

Martinez, one of four women on the squad, started at Emerson as a Securitas security officer in 2009 and became an ECPD dispatcher in 2013. She graduated from the Massachusetts State Police Academy this January, and also holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and sociology from the University of Massachusetts Boston.

“I’ve learned to communicate with people,” said Martinez in an interview posted on the college’s website. “And [let them] know they can always come to the Emerson College Police Department if they need to.”

Martinez, who grew up in Dorchester, said her goal is to become a U.S. Border Patrol Agent.
