Hempfest: No smoking allowed

by Martha Schick / Beacon Staff • September 11, 2014

The Boston Freedom Rally, commonly referred to as Hempfest, will take place on Sept. 13 and 14 on Boston Common. The event is sponsored by the Massachusetts Cannabis Reform Coalition, and, according to its website, this will be the 25th year of the rally.

This is the first time the rally will be held after smoking any substance in public parks in Boston became illegal. Possessing less than an ounce of marijuana is a civil offense punishable by a $100 fine in Massachusetts, and possessing more is a criminal offense.

The Massachusetts Cannabis Reform Coalition website does not explicitly encourage or discourage smoking marijuana at the event, saying, “If people want to partake in a direct resistance to marijuana prohibition at our event, that is their choice, at their own risk.”
