Financial office adds two new staff members

by Jackie Tempera / Beacon Staff • February 28, 2013

After assessments of the department, the Office of Financial Affairs has hired two new staff members, according to Maureen Murphy, vice president for administration and finance, who announced the hirings in an email to the Emerson community.

Loretta Bemis and John Richard joined the college on Feb. 11, according to the email.

Bemis was hired as the associate vice president of procurement and business operations strategies, a new position. The job  was designed to help streamline the purchasing process, said Bermis. This will mean helping the office buy equipment in a more efficient way.

“I am going to work toward reorganization within the group,” she said in an interview.

Bemis, who worked at Brandeis University and Tufts University before coming to Emerson, said she wants to help cut costs at the college.

By increasing the college’s use of the Marketplace Supplies & Services Company, which allows businesses to purchase office supplies and other products on one website, Bemis said she will help employees expedite purchasing. She said she worked with this company at both Brandeis and Tufts.

Richard will take Anthony Ferullo’s place as the director of budget and planning. He will help employees improve accuracy with project budgets, according to the email from Murphy. He previously worked at Simmons College.

Maureen Murphy declined to comment on the new hires.

Bemis said that so far, she has enjoyed the culture at Emerson.

“This is an exciting time to come here, especially with the new president and his plan,” she said. “I want to help make positive changes at this very dynamic institution.”
