!!!; Myth Takes; available Mar. 6
The dance-punk band known as !!! but pronounced "chk chk chk" returns with Myth Takes, its first studio album since 2004. The first single, "Heart of Hearts," needs to be played loud to be appreciated-and needs to be seen live to be truly comprehended. The eight-person band has grown a lot since its formation in the mid-'90s, with its strange but likable mix of punk, dance and rock. Myth Takes was recorded in a rented house in Nashville and was produced by band member Justin Van Der Volgen, but contains no country charm. It is all refreshingly new disco-rock energy.
Lily Allen; Alright, Still; available now
The UK's latest pop import to the States is Lily Allen, a 21-year-old with a penchant for her MySpace blog and her tell-it-like-it-is take on life. The first single off Alright, Still is "Smile," which starts off with the bitterly truthful (and brilliantly vindictive) verse, "When you first left me, I was wanting more / but you were f***ing that girl next door / what'cha do that for?" and goes on to say "at first when I see you cry / it makes me smile." Other songs include "Alfie," which starts out bouncy, sounding like it might be played at Disney World-until Allen goes on to sing "Oh, oh deary me / my little brother's in his bedroom smoking weed." Her honest lyrics are what make Alright, Still worth a listen.
