MARIE ANTOINETTE; AVAILABLE Now
Those who enjoy Sofia Coppola's distinctive style of capturing a character's moments of simplicity will not want to miss Marie Antoinette. Tacked on the elegant yet spunky vision Coppola delivers audiences is a textbook definition of what a visually stunning movie should be. The director explores Marie Antoinette's difficulties with love, politics, and self-identity with precision and poise. To balance the tragic circumstances, comical performances are given by the nonchalant Jason Schwartzman (as King Louis XVI) and the always-commanding Judy Davis (as the Comtesse de Noailles).
BABEL; AVAILABLE FEB. 20
Director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's (21 Grams) Academy Award-nominated film displays four events that prove how miscommunication can be detrimental to life and the world in which we live. Although the film can be somewhat risqué just for shock value, Inarritu effectively conveys the feeling of utter helplessness and struggle through the scenarios involving his main characters. Outstanding performances by all the cast members (including Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett and Best Supporting Actress nominees Adriana Barraza and Rinko Kikuchi) are strongly delivered. Babel makes its mark as a gritty film that will give any viewer a lot to contemplate.
