HOLLYWOODLAND; AVAILABLE FEB. 6
Hollywoodland does a great job of examining the life and times of the original Superman, George Reeves, and his mysterious death. It also reveals a great deal about the inner workings of an acting career during one of the most influential times in film. The harsh realities of the business, the manipulation of the people and the struggles of the craft are all issues Reeves is confronted with. Impressive performances from Adrien Brody, Ben Affleck and Diane Lane make this box-office bust definitely worth a rental trip, especially for those who have aspirations to work in the entertainment business.
FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS; AVAILABLE FEB. 6
This is the first Clint Eastwood WWII film about Iwo Jima that came out in 2006, the one that was only nominated for best sound mixing and best sound editing in the Oscar race. There are two impressive aspects of this film: one is the ensemble cast and the mature roles they are bestowed with (some of the better turns are by Jamie Bell and Barry Pepper), and the other is the always-brilliant cinematography found in an Eastwood credit. Otherwise, it's just another packed epic to check out if you have 132 minutes to spare.
