SONDRE LERCHE; PHANTOM PUNCH; AVAILABLE FEB. 6
Sondre Lerche's fourth album cements in stone the 24-year-old Norwegian singer-songwriter's mission: to create a diverse catalogue that offers something completely different with each album. His 2006 effort, Duper Sessions, was his experiment in a light, jazzy sound (a sharp departure from his first two albums of vibrant indie pop), which was successful enough to get him into the top five on the Billboard Contemporary Jazz Albums chart. This time around, he's attempting to pull off a more abrasive post-punk style, which he describes on his Web site as "Orange Juice meets Fleetwood Mac and My Bloody Valentine."
APOSTLE OF HUSTLE; NATIONAL ANTHEM OF NOWHERE; AVAILABLE FEB. 6
When pretty much every single member of Broken Social Scene involves themselves in about two or three musical projects each, that's a lot of sorta-B.S.S. music for B.S.S. fans to sort through. Luckily, all these splinter bands have their own charm to them. What makes Apostle of Hustle so special is the leadership of B.S.S. lead guitarist/resident showman Andrew Whiteman and his chosen influence of Spanish acoustic guitar on the act's Canadian indie rock. It will be difficult to tell if this sophomore effort will establish the band as something more than a B.S.S. side project, but hopefully it will at least get its members a pat on the back during water bubbler discussion at the Arts & Crafts label offices.
