Two dead after shooting behind Little Building

Violence stuns campus

A shooting behind Emerson College early Monday morning left two men dead and a third injured. Shortly after 2 a.m., as patrons were exiting a nearby club on Warrenton and Stuart streets across from the City Place building, Stanley Seney, 27, pulled out a gun and shot Michael Hayward, 28, according to Boston Police Department (BPD) Spokesman John Boyle.

With a fatal shooting on Monday and two reported rapes all within walking distance of the Emerson campus, police are telling students and residents in Boston to be vigilant when alone on the streets. According to a Cambridge Police Department Community Alert released Sept. 24, two women were sexually assaulted in the city in separate incidents between Sept. 17 and 24.

Faculty debates continue

Emerson College faculty and administration representatives have met three times since classes began in September in an attempt to resolve the ongoing dispute over faculty contracts. The two parties agreed during meetings earlier this year that the resolution will result in both a teaching contract and a handbook of guidelines for the relationship between faculty and administration.

Boston Police Department (BPD) Spokesman Michael McCarthy said plans are in effect to minimize prostitution in the South End/Bay Village. The BPD has made similar efforts in the Theatre District area and Allston-Brighton.

Students to study in New Orleans

In the wake of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, Emerson College is partnering with New England College (NEC) to send a group of eight to 16 students to New Orleans for a service-study program next semester. Emerson became involved with the project when Dennis Kalob, a sociology professor at NEC and head of the New Orleans program, called the NEC Semester in New Orleans, spoke to Associate Professor of Organizational and Political Communication Gregory Payne's Argument and Advocacy class on Sept.

Report: Drug, alcohol referrals increase

On-campus alcohol and drug violations increased at Emerson College in 2004, according to Emerson's "Annual Report: Campus Security Policies and Crime Statistics" published by the Department of Public Safety last week. Some students are concerned, however, that substance violations and the punishments that accompany them may be unfair and too severe.
