The Emerson College women's soccer team won 2-0 against Albertus Magnus College last Saturday. Women's soccer Head Coach Jason Tassinari, however, was not thrilled with the way the team won.

"I love the destination, but the journey was not our best," he said.

Tassinari said the team played much better in their previous game, despite losing to Wellesley College 6-0. "We knew that they [Albertus Magnus] were an inferior opponent, but we allowed them to hang around," he said.

Although Emerson controlled the game from the opening tip, senior Captain Tina Danforth agreed with Tassinari, explaining that the win "did not feel right."

Emerson had 26 shots on Albertus Magnus' goalkeeper Eilene Murray. Murray was able to record 15 saves during the game. Her Emerson counterpart, sophomore Katie Hartman, had only one save during the game.

Yet, the Lions' aggressive offense showed why they were last year's regular season co-champions. The initial shot attempt came five minutes into the game when Murray stopped senior Captain Caitlin Joyce's shot.

The first goal came 26 minutes into in the first half when sophomore Casey Whalen shot the ball into the low right corner. Murray got a hand on it but was not able to keep the ball in her hands as it rolled into the net.

The Lions had another chance to score with 20:03 left in the first half, but sophomore Casey Whalen was unable to convert a pass into a goal, as Murray made the save.

Despite passing the ball well on several plays, Joyce said the women's soccer team must come together to be a competitive team.

According to Danforth, the game was "tough and compact." Instead of playing spread across the field, both teams seemed to be clustered near center field. The style of play led Tassinari to say that his team lacked that "killer instinct" and that they played with "low energy."

When the ball did get near the Lions' goal, an aggressive defense made sure no goals would be scored.

The next goal came with 18 minutes to play in the first half when Whalen passed the ball to Keri Angus. Angus shot the ball just under the crossbar to give Emerson a 2-0 lead and eventual win.

"We cannot play as individuals," Joyce said. "We need to play as one team. [The] team has potential, we just have to start playing to it."
