After an 86-64 win over Daniel Webster College Saturday, the Emerson men's basketball team took a six-game Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) winning streak and first place into Monday's match up with Emmanuel. The Lions dropped that contest by a 69-59 score, falling to second place in the conference behind Norwich University.

Emerson had a lackluster showing against Emmanuel, as the team never held the lead and shot only 28 percent in the second half. Daniel Zinchuk led the Lions with 17 points, ten rebounds and five blocks.

The Lions were forced to take on Daniel Webster without the help of their leading scorer, junior forward Steve Georgoulis. He suffered a groin injury during the team's previous game against Suffolk last Thursday.

The Lions started the game with a 7-0 run, but the Daniel Webster Eagles answered with a 10-0 streak to take a 15-12 lead.

As the half went on, many Emerson starters got into foul trouble. Forward Graham Stephen, center Dan Zinchuk and guard Will Dawkins all had two personal fouls only ten minutes into the game. Already without Georgoulis, the Lions were forced to use more players off the bench, and had to be more careful about committing fouls.

Emerson was able to climb back into the game, after trailing the Eagles for most of the half. A three point shot from Jay O'Connell sent the Lions into halftime up 38-37.

Despite the halftime lead, Emerson coach Hank Smith demanded better play from his team.

"We started the game well because we defended," Smith said. "After we were up so much we lost all discipline. The team heard about it during time-outs and they heard about it during half time. They came back during the second half playing amazing."

Emerson quickly set the tone in the second half, starting out with a three point shot from guard Collin DelCuore. The Lions were soon up 53-44 and kept a comfortable lead until the end.

As the game drew to a close, Emerson pulled away with an impressive 11-0 run to go up 79-55.
