Freshman basketball standout Becky Everett is lighting up the opposition and enlivening her teammates during her first year with the Emerson College Lions.

One of seven freshmen on the team, Everett, 18, earned a starting position as power forward in her rookie season with the team.

She recently achieved career highs in a game against Simmons College where she recorded a double-double, scoring 15 points and grabbing 10 rebounds."

"Becky always has a good attitude," sophomore teammate Pam Coppola said. "She has a lot of heart for the game."

Hailing from the small town of Orange, Mass., Everett has played basketball most of her life and credits her two older brothers for igniting her passion for the game.

"I always wanted to do all the things they were doing," Everett said.

She described her family as a "basketball family" where all the siblings played organized ball.

"I'm pretty much competitive at everything I do," Everett said. "Competitive is the one word that describes me."

Driven to succeed, Everett was a tri-sport athlete in high school, captaining the soccer, basketball and track teams during her senior year. She is also an accomplished dancer, and has taken classes in ballet, tap, modern jazz and point dancing.

A marketing and public relations major with a journalism minor, Everett chose Emerson over other potential schools, including Stonehill College in Easton, Mass., which has a Division II athletic program.

"My parents insisted I go where I could get a good education," said Everett, who added that Emerson's academic reputation played a role in her decision to attend.

Everett said Emerson also allotted her the opportunity to play collegiate basketball, which had been a goal of hers throughout high school. She said she relishes the opportunity to compete at such a high level.

"My goal is to play my hardest," Everett said. "It's not worth it if you don't play your hardest."

Coppola agrees that Everett is always working to improve her game, and has made strides as the season progresses.

"We started winning and Becky has been a big part of that," Coppola said. (The Lions were just 3-18 last season.)

Coppola said Everett's tenacity is evident even at team practices.

"Neither one of us comes out of practice without a bruise or a scrape from the other," Coppola said.

Everett said she cares for her teammates and enjoys playing with them.

"We got to know each other really well," Everett said. "We're almost like family."

As for the future, Everett said she really wants to travel, but for now, she is perfectly happy playing a pivotal role on an up and coming basketball team.
