Emerson competed in its first-ever indoor track meet Saturday, as the women's team traveled to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).

"History was made today," Emerson coach Jared Scarpaci told the squad after the meet. The Lions placed last in the eight-team competition.

Scarpaci and coach Jen Finn formed the team only a week before the meet. After personal workouts at the Emerson College Fitness Center and some training outdoors in the snowy weather, the team arrived at MIT for its first meet.

The competition included host MIT, Emerson, New York University and the University of Massachusetts Lowell, among others.

The track team skipped club status and jumped right to the varsity level so that they could compete in local meets. They have a short season this year, participating in only three consecutive weekend meets.

A lot of the team had little to no experience in indoor track.

"Some people have never been to a meet before," Scarpaci said.

The team tried to view its first meet as a learning experience.

Sophomore long-distance runner Jade Catta-Preta arrived at the meet and was immediately thrown into her first race, barely digesting the bagel she had in her mouth while preparing for the start.

"It was my first time racing," Catta-Preta said. "And it was a good reality check."

She ran the 3,000-meter race in a time of 14:26.32, placing 11th in her heat.

Stephanie Bibeau ran the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:13:08, giving her a third place finish, and placed second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 31:55. Elisa Smilovitz ran a 3:21:24 in the 800 meter race, placing fourth.

Junior sprinter Lauren DeLong had the most indoor track experience of the group, running three years in high school. DeLong competed in the 55 and 200-meter dash races on Saturday finishing in :09 and :33 seconds. DeLong placed second in her heat for the 55 and third in her heat for the 200.
