Emerson defeated Yeshiva University in the first round of the tournament with a score of 70-42. The Lions then rolled on to tournament victory by blowing past St. Joseph's College of Vermont 78-51.
Emerson junior captain Molly O'Keefe was named the tournament MVP. O'Keefe, a guard for Emerson, scored a total of 40 points in the two games. Junior forward Pam Coppola and freshman guard Alie Bernier were also named to the All-Tournament Team roster.
After ending the season with a dismal 3-18 record last year, the Lions have been recharged with eight new players and a positive attitude.
Coppola and Bernier are joined by freshmen Lindsay DeStefano, Becky Everett, Ellie Feitlinger, Mallory Frers, Ashley Galletta and Kelly Kwiecinski to round out the Lions' very young roster.
Second-year head coach Melissa Hart said she is excited about the incoming players and the new energy and excitement they bring to the squad.
"I'm sure that sometimes we will look young, but on the flip side, I think we are just going to get better as the season goes on," Hart said.
Before coming to Emerson last season, Hart was head coach of the MIT women's basketball team. While coaching at the local college, Hart took her team to the Cal Tech Tournament. When asked again to attend with her Emerson squad, Hart jumped at the chance.
The Lions left the Tuesday before Thanksgiving to attend the holiday tournament. While in Pasadena, Calif., the team played its first round game against Cali Tech, winning handily, 75-38.
Emerson then advanced to the championship game to play Simpson College, also hailing from California. The Lions lost a close game, 56-51, to finish in second place in the tournament. Southwestern University, from Arizona, was the fourth team participating in the tournament.
