The fall semester has been a confusing one for Emerson students as possible swim and ice hockey club teams are being thwarted by lack of student involvement and miscommunication.
During October, it seemed both clubs would soon be making their Emerson debut. The swim club held an initial meeting, a student committee was formed to organize and fundraise for the group and a proposed deal to use the Chinatown YMCA pool was worked out.
The ice hockey club also held a meeting and began researching the possibility of renting an ice rink for next semester. Both meetings had optimistic turnouts, with 30 individuals at the swim club meeting and 12 students at the ice hockey one. Neither team will be ready to compete during the winter season, and it is unsure whether either team will ever be Emerson-sanctioned clubs.
"As long as there's student interest and student leadership, there's a possibility for any club that we look at," said Coordinator of Athletic Operations Roger Crosley. He added that in this situation, however, the reason there will be no season for either sport is because of the lack of student leadership and inability to follow through with plans.
The Emerson swim club was the idea of Abby Rekas-Rosalbo, who worked at the YMCA. After organizing the meeting and working out the pool-rental deal, she told meeting attendants she did all that she could and those interested needed to take over total administration of the club. Weeks went by and the committee that had been delegated to develop the club fizzled out, Crosley said.
"No one else decided to pick up the ball and run with it, so it kind of died before it began," Crosley said.
The ice hockey team has run into a different problem. Evan Goldman, a junior film major and founder of the club, is currently doing research and putting together a team; however, the Athletic Department has not been contacted by him since the initial meeting in October.
The department, on the other hand, said the idea for a team is currently at a standstill.
