The Emerson men's and women's cross-country teams began their seasons on a similar note, with competitive showings throughout the first half of the season. The blossoming program continues to establish itself, boasting an expanded roster and more success in 2004.

Underclassmen make up the majority of the men and women's teams, providing optimism for the future of cross-country.

The Lions began the season traveling to New Hampshire to participate in the Daniel Webster Invitational for the first time in the program's history. The women's team began their season on a positive note, finishing in second place overall. The men also finished second out of seven teams at the meet.

The Gordon College Invitational, or the "Pop Crowell" Classic, provided the Lions with the challenge of racing against talented programs such as Roger Williams and Naval Academy Prep at Wenham, Mass. In the competitive field of 16 teams, sophomore John Weselcouch finished with a time of 30:10, 29th overall, and the best among Emerson finishers.

Fellow sophomore Matt Ballof was not far behind Weselcouch at 30:38, good enough to finish 39th. Rounding out the Emerson top five were freshman Ben Phillipo in 49th place, senior Ryan Gibeau in 61st place, and sophomore Nate Larkin-Connolly in 82nd place.

The Lions ended up ninth in the field of 16 at the Gordon College Invitational meet.

On the women's side, junior Vanessa Smith led the way with her 21st place finish, completing the race in 21:28. Senior Erica Harbatkin (21:54) and senior Dariel Cohn (22:12) finished at 31st and 37th, respectively. Laura O'Regan completed the race right behind Cohn at 22:13. Senior Molly O'Keefe and sophomore Lindsay Chabot rounded out the rest of the finishers.

Freshmen Susan Schlegel is enthusiastic about the cross-country team's performance thus far this season.

"So far we've been really competitive in the meets," Schlegel said. "We've struggled through some tough courses but there's always people on the team running hard and improving from week to week. It's been a really good experience."
