The Marketing Communications department is searching for a chair to replace Mary Tharp, who left Emerson at the end of last semester, according to department officials.
The search committee will include two or three faculty members, possibly a chair from another department, and Stuart Sigman, Dean of the School of Communication.
The school put out advertisements for this position in online and print markets at the beginning of September.
Meanwhile, Joann Monteparre, professor of communications sciences and disorders, is serving as the acting chair for marketing communications until a replacement can be found. She took over for Tharp on Sept. 1, although both worked on the transition throughout the summer.
"She was mentoring me as well as getting her stuff taken care of," said Montepare. "Things have been excellent."
According to Undergraduate Program Director of Marketing Communications and faculty member Joseph Rose, the department is only moving forward in light of the change.
"I think the transition has gone as smooth as possible," said Rose. "Joann has just been open and wonderful and is working great as our chair now."
Tharp is currently serving as the chair of the marketing department of Schreiner University in Texas. Upon leaving Emerson, she cited personal reasons for her resignation.
"I resigned for personal reasons, but I was negatively influenced by the uncertainties of the roles of the chairs," Tharp said in an April interview.
"Mary's personal feeling about the situation was that she felt it was difficult for her to accomplish the things she had wanted to accomplish," said Montepare. "There have always been issues that people debate about. Anyone in any department will talk about these kinds of issues."
Montepare will also be assisting in the hiring process by meeting with the applicants and discussing the position with them.
The committee will begin reviewing applications in mid-October.
"We are seeking someone with a broad understanding of the integrated worlds of advertising, marketing and public relations-someone whose understanding is based on solid research, academic training and on industry experience," Sigman said. "It's not unusual for a search for a senior faculty member or chair to take between six months and a year, though I'm certainly hoping we will have a permanent chair in place by September '05."
