The Story Behind Our Name

The Berkeley Beacon has been the weekly student newspaper at Emerson College since 1947. It was named after the intersection of Berkeley and Beacon streets in Boston's Back Bay neighborhood, where the Beacon's office was located for more than 50 years. The paper opened new offices at Emerson's Piano Row Campus Center at 150 Boylston St. after Emerson moved to its Theatre District campus. As The Beacon and its staff continues to expose and analyze important issues at Emerson College, in the city of Boston and beyond, we retain our traditional moniker in honor of the paper's rich history as both a historical record for the college and a training ground for the hundreds of journalists who have passed through its ranks.
