14-story dormitory and campus center to open fall 2006

After recieving bids from ten local construction companies, the college awarded a $45 million contract to Macomber Builders of South Boston for the building of the Piano Row dormatory and campus center.

Vice President of Public Affairs David Rosen said today that the deal was right in line with the expected budget.

A spokesman for Macomber Builders said that the company was unable to comment about the project per request of the college.

The 14-story structure, slated to be built on an Emerson-owned land plot at 144-156 Boylston St., will include residence space for about 600 students, a new student union with meeting spaces for organizations, new rehearsal and performance spance, dining facilities, and the relocated Dean of Students Office.

Some of the offices being relocated to the new campus center are currently located at the Student Union at 96 Beacon St. Many organization offices were located in various former Emerson properties in the Back Bay, such as 126-130 Beacon St., until they were sold last year and are now being temporarily housed in the Student Union Annex on the 10th floor of 120 Boylston St.

Macomber is the contractor for numerous other projects around the state, including a clinical building expansion at Boston-based Children’s Hospital.
